Carlmel Belda’s “San ‘To?” at Galerie Anna

Not only does our physical body but also our psychic cognition
inhabits every place, site or location wherein we find ourselves. Our
perception of a place is intensified by our familiarity with it, possessing
and absorbing us into its inner sanctum, its spirit, though the site be a
lowly sidewalk eatery, a swanky shopping mall, our own disordered
bedroom, or a hometown we visit at fiesta time.
Since childhood, artist Carlmel Belda has been exposed early to
the family’s deep devotion and faith, manifested by the motley
religious icons and figurines placed everywhere in their capacious
residence. This worshipful upbringing has intensely colored his views on
life and art, influenced by the ornate extravagance of the Baroque.
Galerie Anna presents his solo exhibition titled “San ‘To?”,
opening on July 23.
Examining the immediacy of experience sparked by a recognition
of a specific place, Carlmel Belda transforms our awareness of the
reality of places by enacting them as spectral presence.
